Does it really matter what order you apply your skincare products?

Does it really matter what order you apply your skincare products?

Applying in the proper order ensures that your skin receives the full benefits of each product. A good rule of thumb is to apply from thinnest to thickest consistency, or from liquid to cream, and from water-based to oil-based formulas. To make things easy, we've got a cheat sheet just for you!

How to layer skincare

More tips

  • Beauty Pops are an amazing way to wake up the skin and provide a smooth canvas for makeup application in the morning or a cool way to unwind while exfoliating and moisturizing your skin in the evening. We recommend using either morning or night 2-3 times a week. Do patch test Beauty Pops with other active ingredients, as skin can be sensitive after any exfoliant.
  • If you want to add spot treatments, apply before your moisturizer.
  • Retinol application can be tricky, and you may find a specific method that works for you. We advise using this after the serum step at night. Be sure to use it on completely dry skin. This is important, because if your skin is at all damp, the retinol will be able to absorb more deeply into your skin and might cause irritation. We want to apply moisturizers and serums to slightly damp skin, but never retinol. Skip any harsh ingredients, such as acids, vitamin C, and benzoyl peroxide. Some people swear by the moisture sandwich strategy: moisturizer, retinol, then moisturizer.
